The event industry is massive, but there are two major problems with it: environmental damage and inaccessibility. Billions of people around the world attend thousands of events every year, but not everyone has the ability to participate in events and every event has a carbon footprint. At Hopin, our mission is to address both of these issues by providing a sustainable solution that is accessible to everyone.
The Environment Problem
Events are significant contributors to CO2 emissions, pollution, and wasted food and water.
- The average conference attendee produces over 170 kilograms (375 lbs) of CO2 emissions per day.*
- At a tradeshow with 5,000 people shows that despite recycling and composting program efforts, almost half (41%) of rubbish will go directly to landfill.*
- A three-day conference for 1,000 people creates 5,670 kilograms (12,500 lbs) of waste (about the weight of four compact cars).
Getting to and from the event is even worse.
“The major environmental issue associated with festivals and business events is the effect that traveling is having on the world; the high CO2 emission from short/long haul and domestic trips by air, road, and sea are contributing to the planet’s climate change.”*
The transportation sector generates the largest share of greenhouse gas emissions (29%). Greenhouse gas emissions from transportation primarily come from burning fossil fuel for our cars, trucks, ships, trains, and planes. Over 90 percent of the fuel used for transportation is petroleum-based, which includes primarily gasoline and diesel. (Source: EPA)
The problems don’t stop there. Crowd movement and control, noise pollution, access, and parking and litter also have negative impacts on the local environment.
Events are wonderful, but they come with a cost to our planet. But that’s not all.
The Accessibilty Problem
Loneliness is allegedly more dangerous to people than smoking or obesity. Psychologists have found that our identities crumble and the will to live wanes in the absence of meaningful relationships or a sense of personal contribution. We need relationships.
Meetups, festivals, conferences—any events that bring people together—help connect, grow, and develop relationships. We meet new friends, find new opportunities, and cultivate lasting memories.
But not everyone can make it out to an event.
Over 15% of the world’s population experience some form of disability, according to the Worldbank.org. That’s over one billion people who face barriers to attend an event. But it’s not just people who experience disabilities,
It’s parents who can’t leave their children at home to make it to an event.
It’s students who can’t afford a ticket.
It’s busy professionals who can’t get away from work.
Events help take away the pain of loneliness for some people—the capable people who can afford it—but not for all people.
Hopin is changing that. We’re making events available to everyone (with an internet connection).
At Hopin, we believe everyone can experience the same great benefits of physical events — that great connection you randomly bumped into in the lunch line or that book recommendation from a breakout session speaker — without harming the environment.
Part of the solution: remove costly elements from an event (food, travel, venues) and focus purely on what matters: connections and content.
We built Hopin because we want to bring the world together without harming it. Hopin events are sustainable, carbon-neutral, and 100% online, so everybody can come.
Cisco is already doing this with its annual conference, Cisco Live — at the 2011 event, Cisco calculated the carbon benefits of expanding its attendee reach by taking the Cisco Live event online. The company measured 7,550 metric tons of CO2 were avoided by hosting 3,200 virtual-only attendees.
But, you’re probably thinking, online events suck. We know. Like you, we’ve attended a webinar or virtual event before in the past and didn’t love it. That’s why we built Hopin.
Hopin events foster those same little random meaningful moments you get at an event, those happenstance electric group discussions with new friends, those once-in-a-lifetime run-ins with a decisionmaker. Rooms, sponsors, expos, private chats, stages, and backstages — it’s all available on Hopin to everyone, at zero cost to our planet.
Our mission is to sustainably bring all people together. Less loneliness, more gathering, interacting and growing.
Better connections for a better planet.
