The Ocean Conservation in the Curriculum Conference

Welcome to the Ocean Conservation in the Curriculum Conference.

The Ocean is the heart of our planet and offers a rich diversity of learning opportunities for children of all ages - while reinforcing the importance of conservation. The Ocean can be used to teach:

  • Literacy
  • Science
  • Maths
  • Scientific and Research Skills
  • Conservation and Sustainability

This online conference brings together leading experts in curriculum development, conservation and the oceans in a practical and inspiring series of talks and workshops.

Talks include a Key Note Address from Monty Halls. Monty is a British TV broadcaster and marine biologist best known for his BBC Great Escape series, programmes on the Great Barrier Reef and Lost Worlds.

Speakers are drawn from across the education spectrum, with contributions from the Ocean Conservation Trust, EMSEA (European Marine Science Educators Association), Devon Wildlife Trust, UNESCO, Ofsted, Connect Academy Trust and the Shadow Environment Minster

Key Speakers:
Monty Halls – Conservation at a Global Level
Ann Finlayson -  Introducing sustainability into schools
Doug Skinner  -The science behind the climate emergency
Rachel Musson - Practical examples of environmental projects in schools

Workshop Programme:

The conference will be running 3 streams of webinar workshops focused on giving you the chance to focus on the aspects of conversation and curriculum that interest you the most. You can choose to watch the webinar OR be part of the ‘room’ with the speaker.

Connect Academy Trust is introducing a new Ocean Conservation Curriculum from September 2020 in partnership with the Ocean Conservation Trust, Plymouth Marine Laboratory, and the Marine Biological Association. They are applying the 7 Principles of Ocean Literacy across the new curriculum to inspire and educate children about the importance of the Ocean.
As part of the Conference, The CEO of Connect Academy Trust and other leaders will share how they developed the new curriculum and how they are introducing it into their 5 successful Primary Schools.

Ocean Conservation Trust runs the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth, which has been adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. A significant proportion of ticket sales will go towards supporting the work of the Ocean Conservation Trust.
