What is Fintech and what do we expect it to be in 10 or 20 years? How is higher education adapting to the pedagogic requirements of Fintech, and its multi-disciplinary nature.

Join the UWE Fintech team, as provide an insight into Fintech education in academia, its impact with industry, and its place in applying understanding in technologies like Blockchain, Big Data and AI!

The session will include a panel with members of academia, big industry players and local start-ups.

o Dr Christopher Carr, Wallscourt Fellow in Fintech – Accounting, Econmics and Finance, UWE Bristol;
o Dr Hisham Ihshaish, Senior Lecturer – Computer Science and Creative Technologies, UWE Bristol;
o Dr Osman Yukselturk, Associate Head of Department – Accounting, Econmics and Finance, UWE Bristol;
o Dr Yanhui Zhu, Senior Lecturer – Accounting, Economics and Finance, UWE Bristol.

Outline:

There will be an opening and introductory talk from University West of England, providing insights from academics working in financial technology, followed by a panel discussion with four panellists from industry and academia.

The focus of the event will be on the expectation of the coming years in terms of technology. What are the skills and knowledge are required to operate in this area? What are business and academia are seeing now compared with what they expect to see in the coming months and years?

To finish the event, we will create breakout discussion groups, including panellists, for those who want to participate.

Schedule:

Talk with slides, for 15 minutes from the academic perspective.

The talk will focus on:

o What UWE is providing in terms of education and research;
o How organisations can become involved;
o How individuals or students can be involved;
o What has already happened as well as what we expect to emerge.
There will be some time for some questions.

Comfort break for 5 minutes and a panel set up.

Panel on skills in financial technology, including education, trends, experience. The focus will be on what we have seen, the gap between what business needs both as a start-up and within established companies, and what is currently provided by tertiary education. The panel with consist of one moderator from UWE, and four panellists, from Deloitte, Bunk, UWE and a student.

The moderator will also compile questions and select the best ones from a text-based submission.
